this is a nice generalization of the "founders for the sake of being founders" phenomenon i talked about in https://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/you-dont-have-to-be-a-founder/

the Actual Interrogation of why you want to do things is hard. among the high schoolers in our circles, if you asked someone "have you considered being a blacksmith?" they'd say "no" (reasonable), and if you asked them why, they'd say "i don't think i'd be good at it" or "i'm not going to enjoy it", even if they haven't tried anything similar before! i would admire someone who would say something like "i want to make more money than that" or "i've found another job that's good enough and i don't want to bother spending more effort" or "i've tried woodworking and i didn't like it so i'm probably not going to enjoy blacksmithing"

anyway i shilled my blog post so i'm done commenting
